The Palo Alto High School’s varsity boys and girls swim teams unleashed their power in a swim meet last weekend, as both teams went on to claim first place finishes.
Both varsity teams won by a large margin of points, with varsity girls winning with 302 points, and the boys winning with 264 points. The Girls JV team also enjoyed a similar success, winning by over 100 points to second place team, Los Altos High School.
“I was certainly impressed by today’s swims,” head coach Danny Dye said. “We also had a number of swimmers qualify for Central Coast Section.”
One of the most exiting events on Saturday was the varsity boys’ 100-yard freestyle in which, seniors Michael Fortune, Scott Mielke and junior Tim Wenzlau all posted top three finishes.
“The beginning was strong but then by the last lap I was really tired,” Fortune said. “I still managed to pull out the win.”
According to varsity boys’ co-captain, senior Geng Wang, this meet was a good indicator for the rest of the season.
“I think we all swam well this week,” Wang said. “We are where we want to be at this point in the season.”
In the varsity girls’ 200-yard freestyle relay, freshman Sabrina Lee, and seniors Lizzie Abbott, Colleen Fotsch, and Liv Jensen finished with a time of 1:39.91, 15 seconds faster than the second place finisher, Lynbrook High School.
“Swimming on such a strong relay got me excited for the season ahead,” Fotsch said. “Our relays are getting really fast, especially with the freshmen we have this year. These relays should be very competitive at CCS.”
The depth of Paly’s team stood out during the varsity girls’ 200-yard freestyle race. Lee captured the win (2:007.07) as she edged out Stephanie Nguyen of Lynbrook High School (2:007.08.)
“I out touched her by a hundreth of a second,” Lee said.
The Paly swim team’s next meet is at Homestead High School at 3:30 p.m. today in Cupertino.
