Paly Day offered at Books Inc.

Paly’s librarian will be at the Town and Country Books Inc. Friday afternoon to take book requests from students, and then purchase those books for the school’s library.

In addition, Palo Alto High School librarian Rachel Kellerman will – as a result of what Books Inc. is calling “Paly Day” – soon receive even more funds for her effort to restock the fiction section in the Paly library with a modern selection. Ten percent of the sales made Friday at the recently opened Books Inc. will be donated to Palo Alto High School’s library.

“I am going to buy fiction books with the proceeds from Paly Day,” said Kellerman. “Our library houses the oldest collection of fiction books in the district, with an average copyright date of 1980. This is not because past librarians have not been doing their job, but because of chronic underfunding.”

According Kellerman, Books Inc. manager Eric Peterson approached her with the idea of Paly Day.

“I was really excited when I heard the offer for Paly Day,” Kellerman said. “I think that they’re doing it to be a good neighbor. They’ve advertised in the Chronicle and the Weekly and I’m telling as many people as I can to go.”

“Fundraising is a way for us to get people to come into the store,” Peterson said. “It’s our way of establishing ourselves in the community, and it’s natural for us to build a relationship with the school [Paly].”

Paly Day ends with a visit from Frank Portman, author of King Dork. Along with a punk rock jam session and a reading. Pizza will be served at 7 p.m.

“We purposely chose Paly Day to be on the day the Frank Portman will come here because students might be interested in reading King Dork, and they would be more able to get something out of it,” Peterson said.

Paly Day, according to Peterson, is one of the store’s many fundraising days taking place during this week. Other organizations receiving 10 percent donations include the Community Association for Rehabilitation, Palo Alto Library Foundation, and the Children’s Health Council in Palo Alto on March 4, 5, 6, respectively.

The Ronald McDonald House at Stanford and the Palo Alto Junior Museum also received donations collected on March 1 and 2.
