Obama smashes Clinton in JSA mock election

The Paly chapter of Junior Statesmen of America released the final results of Paly’s mock primary election Tuesday after it finished tallying students’ votes in the presidential primaries as well as on state propositions.

Illinois senator Barack Obama won the two-candidate Democrat race by a landslide, claiming 75 percent of the vote to his rival, New York senator Hillary Clinton, who captured 25 percent, according to results released by senior Jon Shan, the JSA Chief-of-Staff.

On the Republican side, support for Arizona senator John McCain surged during lunchtime voting, mushrooming to 41.7 percent of the GOP vote, and beating Texas representative Ron Paul, who had led after ballots cast at brunch were counted in the four-man race. Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney and former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee rounded out the rest of the tally, with Romney taking 21.4 percent of the vote and Huckabee 9.7 percent.

State propositions 91 and 92, which increase funding for public transportation and community colleges respectively, both passed, while proposition 93, which would have changed the term limit structure in the state legislature, was voted down. Propositions 94-97, which would have allowed more gambling on some California Native American reservations, were defeated soundly by a 2-to-1 margin.

Shan estimated that nearly 300 students cast ballots in the mock election, which the JSA held in order to give a political opportunity to students who were not eligible to vote in California’s official state primary, also on Tuesday.
