Paly dominates in trivia competition

Despite being handily outnumbered, members of Paly’s Friends of Millard Fillmore club won the annual trivia competition, which lasted from Friday to Sunday, when they argued their case in front of competitors at the adjudication ceremony on Monday night at Carlmont High School.

The Friends of Millard Fillmore Club is a student-run organization that competes in an annual competition, pitting them against other schools from across the Bay Area.

Throughout the course of the weekend, Paly amassed a total of 448 points out of a possible 500 at the competition, enough to put it ahead of second place Carlmont High School, which received 438. Carlmont, a powerhouse in the competition in previous years, founded the competition in 1969 as a way to improve student research skills.

“Carlmont is a really tough competitior,” senior co-captain Alexei Koseff said. “We always put our best line-up against them.”

The competition consists of a large-scale scavenger hunt in which team members from each school have to answer and document 30 questions. Some of the questions also had assigned tasks, which included taking a picture with a Super Bowl player and visiting an historic site in San Francisco.

Carlmont, unlike many of the other schools, puts a strong emphasis on student involvement in the competition. This year, the school had a large team, estimated at somewhere between 200 and 300 members. Paly has between 20 and 30, making the win even more significant.

“The size of their team reflects the effort they put into recruiting people,” Koseff said.

Besides Carlmont High School, Paly also competed against Woodside, Notre Dame, Gunn, and Castilleja.

The club will enter a state of dormancy until next year’s competition.
