Annual canned food drive comes to a close

With the final weigh-in looming, participants in the annual YCS canned food drive anxiously await to hear the final results. The drive coordinators are anticipating as well, instead hoping that their advertising efforts paid off and have a larger weight total than that of previous years.

“In past years, not a lot of information was presented to the staff,” said Margo Wixom, a Paly teacher and the canned food drive coordinator. “So this year I tried to send advertisements and e-mails to teachers.”

The class who donated the most cans will be awarded a pizza party, causing the competition to engage with its usual ferocity, most notably led by InFocus‘s acquisition of numerous Costco rice bags.

“We supplied enough rice for anyone that could ever want it,” said senior Michael Anderson, one of the InFocus producers.

Steve Foug’s fourth period U.S. history class became the weekday-warriors for his side of the usual InFocus-Foug battle for first place.

“Our efforts were in abundance,” said junior U.S. history student Mikey Callone. “But we wanted to keep the integrity of the game, so we didn’t make a purchase like them [InFocus]. We’d rather help the poor than the class.”

Lynn Chang, the YCS advertisement manager admitted the drive had its flaws.

“It’s been a little rough this year because although there are a lot of advertisements around, and lots of students still don’t know about it,” Chang said. “The problem is not enough teachers really get involved.”

Every year, Paly’s donating efforts are also stimulated by the Thanksgiving turkey trot, where the price to eat is three cans of food. As usual, Paly will donate all of the food collected throughout the year to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara & San Mateo Counties.

The results of the drive will be announced by the beginning of next week.
