Junior girls win Paly's first Powder Puff championship

The junior class became Paly’s first Powder Puff Champions Friday in a 14-7 win over the freshmen. Just before the final match, the juniors narrowly beat the sophomores in a game that took two overtime periods to settle.

The sophomore-junior game finally ended in its second continuation after junior Olivia Garcia lofted a touchdown pass to junior Lizzie Henehan. The sophomores took one final shot and appeared to score, but a video replay showed that they had fumbled and the sophomores were stopped on a fourth-down run to give the juniors a chance at the championship.

In the title game, the juniors took the ball first, but despite a long run that brought them within mere feet of the end zone, turned the ball over after two incomplete passes by Garcia. The freshmen followed suit on their first drive, handing the ball back after three unsuccessful rushing attempts.

Henehan gave the juniors a strong start on their second drive with a run that almost resulted in a score. Two plays later, Henehan threw the touchdown pass that put the juniors on the board and the juniors were successful on the two-point conversion.

Trying to score and keep the game from ending, the freshmen began running through junior defenders who could not pull their flags off. The hits sent players crashing to the ground and at one point junior Becky Byler appeared to have been punched in the eye, but she returned after sitting out a few plays. The freshmen did eventually get to the end zone, tying the game, 7-7.

The next drive saw the juniors marching down the field, running to within a few yards of the end zone before Garcia threw her second touchdown pass of the day to put her class on top, 14-7.

With the temperature dropping and the sun going down, the freshmen were given three plays in which to counter the score. On their second run play, they appeared to have tied the game again, but were ruled down just a yard shy of the end zone. The juniors thwarted the final freshmen rush for a loss of yard to prevent the score.

After the final stop, ASB Secretary Kristen Witte presented the victorious juniors with a large trophy, which they raucously hoisted in the air. The freshmen also received a smaller golden cup as a consolation prize.
