Sophomores maintain lead after Thursday spirit activities

Four different generations took over the school for Spirit Thursday. Baby freshmen, teeny bopper sophomores, sophisticated juniors, and senior citizens yelled, danced, cheered and shouted as about 250 students showed up to school an hour early Thursday morning to participate in the spirit rally.

Classrooms were filled with grey and white haired seniors, some in wheelchairs. Interpretations of body types from protruding beer-bellies to sagging chest lines brought smiles to many faces. In Physics, Mr. Posada cautioned a student, sporting grey hair and a cane, “Don’t throw out your back,” during an experiment involving egg tossing.

Baby faced freshmen in pajamas, and even diapers, roamed the campus. Props included the expected pacifiers and teddy bears. Upperclassmen chanted, “Where’s your mommy?”

Sophisticates took a unique twist on junior apparel ranging from a tie with shorts to a tuxedo for boys and from office apparel to cocktail dresses for girls.

Despite being an hour before the start of school, the morning rally was every bit as loud and boisterous as previous lunch rallies.

“The seniors were out of hand,” junior Molly Whitnack said. Seniors showed extra spirit racing around the gym, rattling car keys and singing. Juniors yelled, “Change your diapers” to which seniors replied, “That’s your job.”

Poodle skirts to rock and rollers created the teeny bopper look for sophomores. The red class retains a strong lead following both the morning and lunchtime rallies.

What seemed like miles of tissue paper, cut into six-inch squares, filled the auto shop this evening as all the classes came together to stuff the floats for Friday’s pre-game spirit rally.

The freshmen’s float is an orange tissue paper banner with the words “The class that smiles back” in white letters. Fish, bubbles, and seaweed line the edges and front of the float.

With red, gold, and black, the sophomores decorated their float. A green mountain protrudes from the tall back with white block letters spelling out “Sophomore” in the style of the Hollywood sign.

Bright yellow flames constitute the juniors’ float. A school setting is depicted by a classroom with desks lining the front and a tissue paper blackboard on a yellow tissue-papered wall.

Trees and rolling hills dominate the seniors’ float. Their slogan, “Save a Tree, Hug a Senior,” stands proudly in the middle.

“So far we have given 110 percent,” sophomore Eoin Whitney said. His class’ score supports his statement, as sophomores continue to lead.

At the end of Thursday, the class scores stand at:

Seniors – 736

Juniors – 460

Sophomores – 886

Freshmen – 407

Juniors and freshmen still have to compete in a tie-breaker relay. Third place will earn 50 pts and fourth will earn 25.
