Boys water polo dominates Monta Vista in league opener

The Paly boys’ varsity water polo team is anticipating a successful season after their 11-3 win over Monta Vista in the league opening Thursday.

“I hope this game shows what’s to come,” said head coach Reid Particelli. “I hope we keep improving and have a good season.”

The Vikings played extremely well throughout the game, only allowing the Monarchs to score once in the first half. Offensively, Paly managed to make most of their goals in the first half, with six scored in the first period and one in the second. Team captain senior Michael Fortune was proud of how the team played, however he thought even more goals could have been scored.

“I thought we did well,” said Fortune. “We had a lot of opportunities in front of the cage and probably should’ve made more shots.”

Although the team worked together to play well as a whole, several exceptional players stood out to both the captains and Particelli. The top scorers of the game were seniors Geng Wang and Michael Fortune, as well as junior Tim Wenzlau. According to Particelli, their efforts led the team to victory.

“Tim definitely came to play today, he was countering up and down the pool,” said Particelli. “We also had some excellent play from our substitutes, with great effort from seniors Andre Keiser and Cyril Gary.”

With an amazing offense and effort throughout the game, it is hard to imagine improvement. However, both Particelli and team Wang said the team could have done better.

“We definitely didn’t play as well as we could have,” said Wang. “We didn’t score in any of our man-up situations, and against better teams this could be a problem. We weren’t really putting our shots away.”

Paly can look forward to an exciting home game against Los Altos this Monday.
