Paly gears up for field day

Field day: A day for students to relax, have lunch, and act like four-year-olds. Field Day usually entails a free lunch supplied by the school, and inflatable play structures for the students to play around in. It will take place Friday during the extended lunch period.

“I love the big obstacle course and it’s always funny to watch people race through it,” senior Christine Young said. “Since freshman year, I’ve always looked forward to Field Day.”

This year will essentially be the same, with the exception of free Otter Pops, with an “extended lunch, free food and lots of fun,” Student Activities Director Allison Davies said.

A copious amount of time is required to coordinate every aspect of the day, from the food to the activities. One thing that Davies is glad about is that it is student run, with help from teachers and volunteers.

“Students pick games and food, approve the funding, provide music, advertise and help set up [everything],” Davies said. “The teachers help chaperone the activities and volunteers help deliver, cook, and serve food while chaperoning the activities.”

In addition to being an investment in time, the stress-free day is a significant investment in money.

“[The] ball park figure [is] $4,000 for the rental of the inflatables and the food,” Davies said.

However, Davies thinks the day is worth the money. The students think they deserve it too and always look forward to the event.

“All students deserve to have this much fun on campus at least once a year,” Davies said.

Senior Melanie Wang said “I’ve worked really hard all year and Field Day is a day where I can forget about school and enjoy the day.”
