Boys' track undefeated heading into League Championships

The boys’ varsity track team came out victorious against cross-town rival Gunn at the last dual meet of the season on Thursday at the Paly track.

The boys trampled Gunn, 81-46, and now enter the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League (SCVAL) championships on Tuesday and Thursday, May 1 and 3, with a perfect 6-0 record.

“Whenever you can go undefeated it’s always good,” Coach Jason Fung said. “It tells a lot about the kids. We have a lot of depth and CCS potential point getters.”

The depth in the team is strengthened by runners being able to train with others of similar speeds and abilities according to senior 400 runner Alex Dalal.

“Having people to train, four or five who can run the 400 and 800 is really helpful for training,” Dalal said.

As the dual meet season came to a close, coaches were happy with the results so far.

“I’m very pleased with the season,” distance coach Jeff Billing said.

The meet proved successful for not only the team but for many individuals.

“Too many [exceptional runs] to count.” Billing said. “If I were to pick two runners who really stood out it would be Sam Margevicious, who PRed [ran a personal record] in both hurdllers, and Trenton Hart, who PRed in the 100m and 200m.

Fung also added the 4 x 100 team to a long list of PR’s. Freshman distance runner Philip MacQuitty maintained his record of strong performances throughout the season, with a great showing last meet as well.

“From the first mile [this season, improved] 22 seconds to 4:26 [yesterday]” MacQuitty said.

The team will have to wait to see how they fare with a different scoring system. At dual meets, first place is awarded five points, second place three points, and third place one point. At the league meet, the first six finishers count as points for their team. First place is given 10 points, then eight, six, four, two, and one point.

“It [scoring system] favors teams who are a little less deep than our team, but can get the ten points,” Billing said. “Los Altos has a couple of really good athletes, and Los Gatos has some really good athletes. They’ll be pretty tough to beat with this scoring.”

Fung agrees that Los Gatos will be Paly’s biggest challenge.

“Los Gatos has pretty much the most big point getters,” Fung said. “That was also the hardest and closest meet, and it wasn’t even that close [74-53].”

Individual athletes as well as relays can qualify for CCS qualifiers from the league meet.

“We’re going to dominate in the 4 x 400,” Dalal said.

MacQuitty is taking the post season one step at a time.

“I’m just trying to qualify for CCS qualifiers,” MacQuitty said.” [Matthew] Pertrillo will be pretty much my only competition at leagues.”

Petrillo ran a 9:42:39 two-mile against Los Altos, and a 4:30:93 last Thursday on the mile against Lynbrook.

The league meet is Tuesday at 3:00 P.M and Thursday at 2:30 P.M. at the Los Gatos High School track.

“We’re the favorites,” Billing said. “We have to continue to perform the way we do and continue to improve.”
