Boys' track and field dominates Los Altos, remains undefeated

Paly’s varsity boys track and field team has shown a knack for sweeping its opponents by large margins this year, and Thursday’s meet against Los Altos proved to be no exception as the Vikings crushed the Eagles 86-42 while preserving their own undefeated season and bringing their record to a perfect 5-0 in league.

Powerhouse seniors Trent Hart and Will Frazier, junior Mike Scott and freshman Daniel Jones were first to set the victorious mood of the meet in the varsity 4×100 relay. The team barely trailed Los Altos runners at the 100-meter mark, but Hart, as second leg, proved he was in it to win it, passing all Los Altos opposition and generating a lead for the team that never died. Anchor Frazier crossed the line first at 44.08, trailed by Los Altos’ A-team which came in at 45.15.

Hart, Frazier and Jones again showcased domination during their respective first, second, and third place finishes of 11.48, 11.55, and 11.78 in the 100-meter dash. The three ran another blowout race in the 200-meter event, with Frazier finishing in a first place 23.42, Hart at a second place 23.79, and Jones at a third place 23.94. Despite victorious results, Hart said that he, along with his teammates, had still clocked in with times that were slower than usual.

“Those were the worst times we’ve done all year,” Hart said. “They were even slower than [our] Stanford Invite [times].”

Similarly, Scott also received weaker marks for his performance in the high jump, yet finished first place in the event against Los Altos, soaring over the bar set at a towering 6 feet 2 inches. Currently tied for first place in the Central Coast Section for the high jump with a personal record of 6 feet 6 inches, Scott said that his poorer results at Thursday’s meet were due to a lack of challenge.

“I thought they would give me competition,” Scott said of Los Altos’ high jumpers, “but it didn’t turn out that way.”

Senior Sam Margevicius, on the other hand, faced extremely stiff competition from Los Altos’ senior Eric Hersey, who holds this season’s top CCS marks in both the 100- and 300-meter hurdles. Nevertheless, Margevicius braved Hersey’s speed and overcame obstacles to still finish strong in his races.

“I did alright in the 300 [meter hurdles],” Margevicius said. “In the 100 [meter hurdles], I was hoping to do really well, but I slipped coming out of the blocks.”

Margevicius still managed to place second in the 300-meter hurdles at 44.34 and second in the 100-meter hurdles at 16.09, with the first place position filled by Hersey in both events.

More strong finishes from the team came from the second and fourth place finishes of juniors Rajan Narang and Sam Jones in the mile at 4:48.11 and 4:54.77, respectively, first and second place finishes from junior Willie Xiang and senior Alex Dalal in the 400-meter with times of 53.34 and 53.42, respectively, and juniors Robert Miller and Brian Karvelas finishing first and third place in the 800-meter with times of 2:03.89 and 2:09.34. Narang went on to win the 3200-meter race with 10:30.80, followed by sophomore Skyler Cummins in third palce with a time of 10:44.83. Senior Fred Koloto swept the throwing events at the meet, placing first in the discus, with a throw of 128 feet 1 inch, and the shot put, with a throw of 47 feet 3 inches.

With another victory under their belts, the boys’ varsity team awaits next week’s dual meet against cross-town rival Gunn. The Gunn meet marks the last dual meet of the normal season, yet Scott plans to maintain a consistent and dedicated mindset as he prepares to compete in his events.

“I just tell myself it’s time to get it done,” Scott said.

Frazier has no worries when it comes to competing against Paly’s old foe.

“Gunn’s a good competitor, but we’re going to whoop them and get in them,” Frazier said.

Hart shares a similar attitude towards the meet against Gunn.

“We’re going to turn up something vicious,” Hart said.

The track and field team will face off against the Gunn Titans from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thurs., April 26 on the Paly track.
