Students turn to math drop-in center for study, homework help

With finals merely a couple days away, students are scrambling furiously to review this semester’s math topics.

In its second year in operation, the Paly math drop-in center provides students with math homework and study help Monday through Thursday throughout the year, from 3:15 to 4:15 in Room 710.

"We were looking for a place to give help. Not everyone has math parents," instructional supervisor Suzanne Antink said.

Along with at least one math teacher present to assist students, some students from advanced math classes also volunteer.
"It’s great," junior Jenny Ji, a B.C. Calculus student, said. "I’ve been there once or twice. It’s a cool place to just drop by and do homework. You don’t even need to get help."

The service is offered to students of all math levels.

At the center, the atmosphere is quiet and relaxed with students working independently or in small groups. Currently, between three and ten students attend each day, according to Antink, but there is room for more.

Math teachers take turns running the center and helping students. While attendance is low on Monday, according to Friedland, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday are much more popular.

As the semester draws to a close students may choose to utilize the math drop in for studying and last minute help.
