School board gets new president and vice president

Camille Townsend will be president of Palo Alto’s Board of Education for the coming year after a 4-1 vote by board members Tuesday, Dec. 12.

Commissioner Gail Price was the only board member opposed to Townsend as president, and in a short discussion before the vote, talked about the priorities of the school board and district.

"The board needs strong leadership with visionary methods as a leader for the school board," Price said. "The board should provide vigorous leadership to restore the community’s perception of the board."

Previous board president Many Lowell nominated Townsend with a second from Dana Tom, who moments later would be selected as Townsend’s vice president.

"From what I’ve heard from Townsend, I think she will be very good at working to close the achievement gap, improving our curriculum, and what will best serve all student," Lowell said.

Townsend’s first act as president was to elect a vice president. Board member Barb Mitchell nominated Tom, and Lowell quickly seconded the nomination. Without discussion, Tom became vice president in a 5-0 vote in his favor.

As Lowell stepped down from president, she was acknowledged for her work for the past year.

"On the board I am always impressed with her complete and total dedication to our school district in trying to serve all students as best we can," Tom said.

Lowell was also praised for her attitude and work ethic in leading the board,

"Mandy is of quick mind and warm heart and a pleasure to work with," Townsend said.

As Lowell changed places with the new leaders of the board, she showed confidence in their management.

"Good luck to you, Camille and Dana, as you embark on leading our district to another great year," Lowell said.
