“Cheer is the kind of sport that grabs you by the throat and never lets go.”
The Palo Alto Vikings cheer team may be on the brink of a transformative season as Coach Gurewitz, a seasoned cheerleader and passionate coach, steps into her role for the upcoming fall season. Gurewitz — from her high school days to cheering at UC Berkeley — brings abundant energy and the novel perspective of a younger coach.
According to varsity cheerleader junior Ivy Hardy, there has been a significant energy shift since Gurewitz’s arrival.
“We’ve only had her for about two weeks, but the vibe is fresh, and we’re excited to see where it goes,” Hardy said.
Despite taking occasional breaks from cheerleading after high school and again after college, Gurewitz’s passion for cheer shines through.
“I have tried to take a couple of breaks, once after high school, and then another after college, but I keep coming back,” Gurewitz said. “It’s endlessly fun, and there’s always new things to love about it.”
According to Hardy, the cheer squad has had some challenges with previous coaches and team dynamics. However, the squad remains optimistic for the upcoming season.
“With JV having such a big team this year, it’s going to be fun to watch both teams grow,” Hardy said.
Gurewitz said her coaching philosophy revolves uplifting those who are empathetic, passionate, and dedicated.
“It’s a year-round sport and it takes a lot of work,” Gurewitz said. “Dedication is huge, practicing at home and going to all these events and away games, and cheering on other sports as well as having our own competition.”
