School Board to discuss school calendar

The Palo Alto Unified School District (PAUSD) Board of Education will discuss a proposed calendar for the 2007-08 and 2008-09 school years on Tuesday, Nov. 14 at 25 Churchill Avenue.

The new calendar would extend summer vacation to the end of August, eliminates ski week and puts finals after winter break, according to Camille Townsend, a school board member.

The Palo Alto Educators Association voted for their preferred calendar on Oct. 27, and they favored Calendar B –the one being considered by the school board- over Calendar A by a three-to-two margin, according to PAUSD officials. Calendar A would have school continue to start in mid-august, and have finals take place before winter break. This would cause semesters to be different lengths and would have kept ski week, according to Townsend.

"There is no calendar issue on which our community is unanimous," board president, Mandy Lowell said.

Many factors were considered in deciding on a calendar. When school begins, as well as if elementary schools should start school with a full week, were also discussed, according to Lowell.

"I think [finals] after winter break makes more sense," Townsend said, supporting calendar B. "[Calendar A] makes the holiday season stressful."

To hear discussions and address the board regarding the proposed calendar, come to School Board meeting at 7 p.m.
