What happened to In Focus?

Think back to the beautiful days of Goodspeak, Herbgate and the "fireside chats." Think back to the hilarious antics of the creative and daring producers. Think back to the glory days, the first semester of In Focus, complete with engaging theme songs, informative and vivacious reporters, and, most of all, witty, well written, and well made segments.

Somewhere along the doldrums of the beginning of second semester In Focus lost its shine. Hilarious segments like "Timegate" were replaced by tedious segments about sandcastle making and trucks driving through mud. It did not hit us all at first, sitting in anticipatory excitement in our fourth period desks, waiting for a little spark in the otherwise boring days, but soon we realized the humor was fading. It was then that word got around that there had been a change in management. The In Focus producers were no longer in their positions for various reasons. The students who had brought us so much laughter were gone.

The segments got progressively worse and worse, each one far blander than the last. We are now in a dry spell, most of us not even looking up at the TV in those first five minutes of fourth period. Segments occur about once a month, and when they do they are desperate and clearly lacking in effort.

And so, in requiem, we take off our hats and try to remember the glory days. We accept that the current management’s apathy for our entertainment roots from their self-involvement, their recklessness caused by their proximity to freedom from high school, but this is no excuse to leave us with nothing but drawling voices spouting out that "advisory is for all Seniors and A through L Freshmen". Where’s the zest? Where’s the love? Where’s the humor? Where did the In Focus we loved so much go?!

And so, in closing, let us not remember In Focus‘s ’05 to ’06 season with resentment. Let us not hold anger in our hearts that we were let down so severely in the second semester of the year. Let us instead smile and chuckle and remember the earlier days of the year, the humor and wit, the creativity and individuality that was In Focus back in the day.
