Graduation speaker and performer sign-ups this month

If standing on a stage in front of 5,000 people speaking or singing until tears run down the audience’s cheeks is something you have always wanted to do, then here is the perfect opportunity.

Now is the time to sign up to speak, sing, or play a musical instrument at graduation. According to Student Activities Director Joann Vaars, student auditions will be held some time before Spring Break, and hopefully by the end of March. Students should audition with the song or speech they plan to give at graduation.

"The baccalaureate is 60 minutes from start to finish while graduation is 90 minutes," Vaars said. "We factor in the items we have to do, such as the Baccalaureate Keynote and the graduation reading of names. Then we see how much time is left for student talent and which performances or speeches are desired and can fit the time frame available. The length of each performance depends on timing, and how many people are presenting."

A committee will meet after the audition to determine whether presenters should perform at the indoor baccalaureate or the outdoor graduation ceremony, depending on the nature of the performance.

According to Vaars, so far only Paly’s Dance Club, Hipnotik, has signed up to audition. Prospective students should sign up on the sheet outside Vaar’s office in the tower building by the end of this month.
