Paly Choir professes its love for music in upcoming V-Day concert

As decadently attired Paly Choir members take the stage, the small talk will fade away in the romantically lit lounge complete with artful desserts and sparkling cider.

The talented voices of the Paly Choir will soon to fill St. Mark’s Episcopal Church with classic love songs in two different showings of their Valentine’s Day-themed performance “Love Through the Ages.”

“The concert features timeless love songs,” choir instructor Michael Najar said. “[The songs are] from [composers] George Gershwin to Otis Redding and from [musicals] Wicked to Rent.”

Both main choir groups, the Madrigals and the Heartbeats (a the barbershop quartet ), will all perform on Saturday. The songs, are selected as to be familiar to the audience, such as the Dixie Chicks’ “That Lonesome Road” and the Beach Boys’ "Why Do Fools Fall in Love?"

The concert also supports many chances for soloists to shine. Senior Sean Blum will solo in “With a Little Bit of Luck” from the musical My Fair Lady, Choir President senior Mary Hewlett and senior Kenzie Lee will perform Frank Sinatra’s “Here’s to Love” as a duet, senior Naomi Shiffman will sing “Turn Me On” by Norah Jones, seniors Danya Taymor and Meredith Bohling will sing the duet “Take Me Or Leave Me” from Rent, and Lee will solo in Van Williams’ “Art Song.”

“Most of the songs are pop, Broadway or jazzy; things we don’t usually get to sing,” Hewlett said. “Normally we focus on classical stuff.”

According to Hewlett, each choir member will dress from different eras for the concert. Since the theme is "love through the ages," choir members will wear costumes of famous couples. The variety of couples range from Henry VIII and his six wives, to J.K. Rowling’s magical characters Ron and Hermione from Harry Potter.

Between songs, choir members perform short skits in accordance with the overall theme, which is centered on a “tunnel of love.” The sundry characters become comically mismatched within the “tunnel” and by the end of the concert they must find each other again.

In comparison to past concerts, this one is entirely student-run through various committees for entertainment, decorations, technology, food and fundraising. The fundraising committee organized a raffle for the audience during the concert.

“The whole process has been a good learning opportunity for everyone,” said Hewlett. “We [the students] are responsible for everything that is usually taken care of by Mr. Najar and parents.”

This concert is also the biggest fundraising event for the Paly Choir, according to Taymor. Most of the proceeds will go directly to their much-anticipated Brazil tour during this coming summer. The rest of the profits will go to funding musical supplies for the rest of the year.

“The idea of the concert is that love transcends the ages; love is always here,” Lee said. “I hope people get in the mood for love.”

The performances will take place at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11 at St. Marks Episcopal Church at 600 Colorado Blvd. Admission is $5 for students and $10 for adults. Tickets may be purchased at the door.
