Paly varsity boys soccer looks to rebuild

After a bitter loss to Gunn in last year’s Central Coast Section semifinals, the Paly varsity boys soccer team looks to rebuild after losing 15 seniors and 10 starters to graduation.

“Our main goal is to finish top three in the league,” senior Shane Clark said. “We still have high expectations despite losing so many seniors.”

The team faces problems such as inexperience and other competitive teams in the league.

“Our toughest opponents are Mountain View and Gunn,” head coach Don Briggs said.

Some key players who graduated include Cameron Taylor, Manny Barrigan, Pierre Meloty-Kapella and Jean Choi.

Players to look for this year include junior midfielder Patrick Alonis and seniors forward Erik Wardenburg, defender Shane Clark and goalkeeper Tommy Brown.

Because of the team’s inexperience, sophomores Zal Dordi, Scott Ostrau and Max Wilson have been called up from the junior varsity ranks.

“There’s a big difference between JV and varsity,” Briggs said. “Varsity is much more physical and a lot faster. It’s going to be very crucial for them to adapt as quickly as possible.”

The team first hosts Menlo-Atherton at 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 22.

“Our success as a team depends heavily on how quickly we can come together and mesh as a team to play,” Briggs said.
