Lady Vikes finish fifth in CCS

Palo Alto High School’s girls’ track team participated in the CCS finals meet at Los Gatos last Friday. The Lady Vikes faced the top runners and jumpers from local schools.

Paly started off on a good note in the 4-by-100-meter relay. Senior Katrina Zawojski had a crucial leg in the race and handed off to sophomore Alyson Seedman who passed Mitty just before the line for third place. This qualified the girls for the upcoming state meet.

Saratoga senior Alicia Follmar impressed the crowd with victories in the mile and 800-meter events. Her mile time was 4:52, which beat her closest competitor by almost ten seconds. She took out her competition in the 800-meter race in the last straightaway, and won by one second with a time of 2:07.

In the 400-meter race, Paly freshman Mia Lattanzi broke her old school record winning the race with a time of 56.18 seconds. Lattanzi finished a half a second ahead of Los Altos sophomore Bria Nelson.

Zawojski was ranked first in the triple jump heading into the event. Unfortunately, she jumped 37’7", which was not far enough to qualify her for states. This was the same scenario for the long jump. She missed the qualifying distance by only an inch. Zawojski will go to states only in the 4-by-100-meter relay.

Valley Christian’s junior Khrystal Carter had a record setting 100-meter race. She blew out the competition with a time of 11.57 seconds, which is the fourth fastest time in the nation for high school runners this year.

In the two-mile race, sophomore Renata Cummins was seeded eighth. She stuck in the back of the race, and slowly made her way to seventh place. In the last 100-meters Cummins tried to sprint for sixth place, but twenty meters before the line, Cummins collapsed. She was able to get up and finish in ninth place, and was in good health an hour later.

The 4-by-100-meter relay team and Lattanzi are on their way to the state meet, which takes place on June 3 and 4 in Sacramento.
