Palo Alto hockey rolls into postseason

The Palo Alto roller hockey club completed it season this week in first place, qualifying for the playoffs.

The first playoff game will be held Friday, June 3, at Rollin’ Ice hockey rink in San Jose at 6 p.m.

The season ended for the team with an outstanding record at 7-1-0.

"This has the best season so far," sophomore Max Rattner said. "I think we will easily make it through the finals and have a good shot at winning it all."

The roller hockey team, in only its second year of existence at Paly, moved up from division five to division four, to division three, earlier this year. However, division three proved to be to tough for the young team, as they dropped down again to division four where they played out this season.

Palo Alto leads the division in goals scored. Paly had an average of a little more than nine goals per game, while allowing less than four goals per game for the opposing team.

Paly senior Adam Sohn leads the division with 29 goals and nine assists. Right behind him is Rattner, who has successfully landed 20 shots behind the opposing goalies and assisted on eight plays. Defensive powerhouse, sophomore Alex Ochowicz, is the leagues third top scorer with 15 assists and 12 goals.

Totaled all up, the three Palo Alto players combined for 93 points as the regular season ended. To put that number in context, to find another group of players with 93 points one must combine the next eight leading scorers, including Palo Alto junior Alexander Fodor, who had nine points on the season.

"These next [playoff] games really mean a lot to the team. We want to give the seniors a big send-off," Rattner said, describing his feelings about losing seniors for the first time. "They have really helped make this team what it is today."

This years teamed featured the talent of 12 Paly students. Next year the team hopes to remain strong as they loose two seniors including their top player, Sohn.

"I cannot use words to describe the amount of fun I had this season," sophomore Faraz Kauser said. "I wish I could play with the team everyday, I was always sad when I couldn’t show up."
