Last instrumental concert of the year to open on Thursday

This year’s final Paly instrumental concert will take place Thursday in the Haymarket theatre at 7 p.m.
The concert will be approximately two hours long, showcasing the talents of the Concert, Symphonic and Jazz bands, as well as the Orchestra.

For the most part, the students will be playing classical music and jazz. The Symphonic band will be playing Leonard Bernstein’s "Dance Music From on The Town," along with a few other pieces.

The Concert band will perform Mozart’s “Marriage of Figaro” and Warren Barker’s “Les Miserables.”

“My favorite piece is ‘Marriage of Figaro’ because it’s a recognizable overture and is fun to play," Concert band member freshman Katie Monroe said.

“I love band because it’s fun to play a piece over and over again until I get really good at it; I find enjoyment from seeing improvement over time,” Concert Band member sophomore Valora Hanko said. “At the beginning of the year, however, I was very pessimistic because I am one of only two sophomores in Concert Band, due to
a schedule conflict.”

The orchestra will be playing Bach’s “Fugue in G minor” and “Rossini’s Barber of Seville.”

The Jazz Band and Jazz Ensemble will be performing together during the concert. They will play "Nutville" by Horace Silver and "Kingfish" by Bill Holman.

“Nutville is extremely fast and loud,” Jazz Band trombonist sophomore Lia Seth said. “It’s a lot of fun.”

Not only will the bands and orchestra be performing, but Paly music teacher Jeff Willner will be giving awards to students and volunteers after the performances. There are four large awards to be presented at the concert in addition to awards for the volunteers. Willner will present the “most outstanding senior band member” with the John Philip Sue’s Award. The Louis Armstrong Award will be given to one notable member of the Jazz Band. The Director’s Award is awarded to “not necessarily for the best player, but the most helpful,” Willner said. The Orchestra Award will be granted to a remarkable orchestra student.

“This was a really good year, but it was very difficult being in the student center,” Willner said. “Acoustically the place is appalling.”

Except for being in the student center, most students believe the year went well.

“I was only here for second semester, but I learned a lot during that time,” Monroe said. “The pieces were challenging, but at our level.”

There is no admissions fee for the concert and the music will be fast paced and, for the most part, familiar. Come to the Haymarket at 7 p.m. for a two-hour concert of jazzy music and an end-of-the-year awards ceremony to finish off the music season.

“You can’t help but be entertained,” Willner said.
