Heavy rain fells tree in Paly parking lot

A fallen tree stalled Paly traffic at the Embarcadero parking lot this morning.

According to assistant principal Katya Villalobos, rain weakened the Pine tree’s roots, causing it to fall. "The tree had very shallow roots, maximum three feet in the ground," Villalobos said.

According to construction workers, the tree fell sometime last night. "Workers arrived at 6:30 a.m. There was no damage, and no one was hurt," Villalobos said.

"I think it was just from the heavy rain," custodian Hok Ky said. "The ground is soft."

The tree blocked the drains of the flooded area, and workers brought in pumps to drain the pool forming in the parking lot.

Construction workers toiled to remove the tree, and by 1 p.m. the tree was cleared and the water drained.

A stump remains and has yet to be mulched with the rest of the tree.

The following reporters contributed to this story: Taylor Whitfield, Elena Marinelli, and Kristen Barta.
