Weekly one-on-one: Mike McNulty

Voice: How long ago was In Focus started?

Mr. McNulty: It was started six years ago but it?s been live for four years.

V: Who were the creators of In Focus?

M: Woj originally started it in the spring of ?98. When it was started it was a very small class that I eventually took over.

V: How did you get involved in In Focus.

M: It was a process of elimination. I had the most background in broadcast journalism so I guess I was chosen because I had experience.

V: Why did the beginning of this year?s In Focus change?

M: That?s my fault, we had a semi-obsession of getting an aerial view of the campus and this summer we had that opportunity. So a student and I went up and shot the view. I feel like you have to change the beginning every year because the students change.

V: Lately, there have been a lot of complaints about the lack of humor in In Focus this year. What?s the reason for this?

M: There are a lot of things, every year is different. We don?t have a Jay Hoffman every year and also this year we chose to start right away so we could reach the audience quickly. However, usually we have a month of training before the first broadcast.

V: Are you pleased with this year’s In Focus staff?

M: There?s nothing better, it?s the best part of the class.

V: How does the anchor system work?

M: We always let people who want to anchor do it. However, over the last three years the class size has really increased and it?s hard to be accommodating. Seniors always get priority, but the anchors will switch at the semester.

V: I know that my fourth period class is always looking foreword for the In Focus segment; can you give me an idea of some of the segments that are coming up?

M: We are in the middle of Anchor Wars, which should be really fun. We also have some coming up on favorite Paly hangouts and we are going to continue doing the five questions with?segment. One of the bigger ones is the Pimp my Ride winner segment coming up.

V: How do you and the staff get most of your segment ideas?

M: Same as campy, we have big brainstorming sessions.

V: What?s with the pictures at the end of the In Focus episodes?

M: Tony Vallone started that. I don?t want to know where they find those pictures, they are pretty weird.

V: How long ago were you able to start uploading episodes onto the Internet?

M: Last Year

V: How has uploading the episodes helped In Focus?

M: When the systems are working, including the streamer, its great for parents and relatives to be able to see their child on the computer. Even some students that use to be on In Focus that have left for college have been tuning in online.

V: What is the best part of being the In Focus teacher?

M: It’s easy, the kids.
