Frosh/ Soph team continues to bring in wins

With a clear victory over the Mountain View Spartans Friday night, Paly frosh/ soph football added a second win to the 2004 season, bringing their overall record to 2-0.
The Vikings scored 33 unanswered points against Mountain View in the boys’ first home game under new lights.

“Every game is important,” frosh/ soph head coach David Duran said before the game. “We have got to keep getting better every time we play.”

The team did exactly that. Burlingame scored 12 points against the Vikings last week. In this game, Paly did not allow Mountain View a single touchdown.

The first quarter started off well defensively with a sack by sophomore defensive back Kevin Dexter and continued with a strong offense and 5 yard touchdown run by sophomore running back Maurice Williams. Williams scored a second touchdown, making a one-handed catch in the back of the end zone from an off-balance throw by sophomore quarterback Nick Goodspeed.

“I did pretty well,” Williams said. “This is probably the best game I’ve ever had, but I still need to improve every aspect of my game.”

Williams returned a 45-yard punt in the first quarter and a 50-yard punt in the second. In the second quarter Williams also returned a 55-yard punt, but was brought back for holding.

In the second quarter, the Vikings continued to dominate offensively, with two touchdowns scored by sophomore running back William Frazier.

By half time, the scoreboard showed clear Viking dominance. However, Duran still felt the boys could do better.

“We made some big plays, but we’re not executing the way we would like. We need to block better and improve our specialties, “ Duran said.

Players and fans got a surprise late in the third quarter when the sprinklers unexpectedly went off. A time-out was called due to the interference, as a wave of laughter swept over the crowd.

“It was the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever seen in my life,” sophomore Maxx Rattner said in response to the sprinkler mishap.

Despite the temporary delay, the Vikings stayed strong and ended the third quarter 25-0, giving the Spartan offense little hope of recovering.

By the fourth quarter the game was over as far as the Vikings were concerned. The score was 31-0 in Paly’s favor. With minutes left on the clock, a final safety gave two points and possession to the Vikings, ensuring a shut-out victory.

The players were elated by the final score of the game.

“They played great,” injured sophomore Evan Warner said. “We just shut a team out 33-0. We are on a roll. We are going to keep doing what we are doing.”

Paly will get a chance to continue with their winning streak when they play Los Altos this Thursday, Sept 23 at 3:15 p.m. at Los Altos High School.
