Paly beats undefeated cross-town rival

The Paly varsity swim team remains undefeated in league after beating cross-town rival Gunn Thursday.
The meet was the second to last before leagues and could be decisive in determining CCS standings. The lady vikes won 11 of 12 events by a margin of 78 points, 132-54. The boys’ teams were close throughout the meet until the end when Paly pulled ahead and won 103-84. However, it was expected to be a close meet for both the boys’ and girls’ teams because both schools were undefeated going into the meet.

Paly junior Remy Champion started the girls off well by placing first in the 200 meter individual medley with an impressive time of 2:14, and continued when she swam the 100 meter freestyle with a time of 55.22. R. Champion also contributed to Paly’s success by winning the 200 freestyle relay with freshman Tanya Wilcox, and sophomores Becky Wenzlau and Phoebe Champion. P. Champion won the 50 meter freestyle with a time of 25.87, also adding to Paly’s success.

"It was an important win because we remain undefeated and it helped us toward our season goal of winning the league overall and the league championship meet," R. Champion said. "Gunn is also our main competitor so it gave us a good idea of how well we were doing and what kind of team we should expect to face in CCS," she added.

The Paly boys had similar success in the meet. Freshman Peter Low, who has been performing well all season continued his accomplishments by placing first in the 100 breaststroke. Paly senior captain Kalani Leifer won the 100 backstroke and swam a leg in the winning 400 freestyle relay. "It was an exciting meet," Linda Hildreth said, co-head coach. "We really pulled it together and looked like a real team. It was great boost of morale because about a month ago in the paper it said Gunn was going to be very tough to beat, and we did it."

"We need to work on our block starts for next meet," said Hildreth regarding Lee Anderson’s disqualification for a false start. "We need to keep a stronger focus."

The junior varsity girls won with an outstanding score of 134-52, while Gunn’s junior varsity boys team defeated Paly, 118-67.

The team has its last dual meet before leagues this Thursday. "It should be a good challenge for the boys because they Los Altos boys have a strong squad," Hildreth said.
