Students will have the opportunity to participate in on and off-campus community service activities during the Palo Alto High School Youth Community Service-Interact Club and Key Club annual Service Day on Monday.

Over 150 students are signed up to spend the day volunteering at one of 12 off-campus locations, including the Magical Bridge Playground, St. Anthony’s Padua Dining Room, and the Animal Assisted Happiness Smile Farm. Activities range from helping at homeless shelters to weeding and gardening at the Byrne Reserve.

The Key Club will also be holding activities such as writing letters to veterans and making pet toys during lunch on the Quad. All students are welcome to participate and no sign up is required.

“Anybody can participate, whether it be off-site or on-site,” said Laura Kim, junior YCS publicity lead. “Giving back to the community is important, and Service Day is the perfect chance to do so. Service is something that everyone should be a part of in our community. It’s an opportunity for everyone to get involved and learn more about their community.”

Although sophomore Avery Hanna, underclassmen representative for the YCS Club at Paly, helped plan the event, she said she will not be participating this year due to the lack of a flex day. In the past two years, event organizers have arranged Service Day to coincide with a flex day; however, this year, no such day exists, so students will be excused from classes instead.

“I’m really upset because I put a lot of work into this, and I was really excited [to go],” Hanna said. “I would have loved to do it this year if it had been possible with the time.”

Sign-ups for the event have closed, but general information concerning projects and time is still available on the sign-up website.
