Paly varsity swimmers stay strong in Monta Vista meet

Palo Alto High School’s varsity swim teams pummeled Monta Vista this Friday in the Monta Vista dual meet and on Saturday in the Menlo relays.
In the Monta Vista dual meet, the varsity girls won by a margin of 61 points, more than doubling Monta Vista’s score, beating them 118 to 57. The varsity boys won by a margin of 38 points, winning 104 to 66.

The girls’ success came from their strong relay teams which placed first in all three relay events. In the first event, the 200 medly relay, the Vikings clinched first, second, and third places. Juniors Monika Friedman, Remy Champion, and Ashley Yee and senior Emmy Scandling placed first in this event with a time of 1:59.27. Monta Vista trailed all of Paly’s times for this event, placing fourth with a time of 2:10.25.

Paly sophomore Becky Wenzlau had a terrific meet, placing first in the 200 free with a time of 1:58.71 and winning the 100 free with a time of 55.28. She also contributed to Paly’s success by swimming a leg of the winning 400 free relay.

Along with Wenzlau, juniors M. Friedman, and R. Champion and sophomore P. Champion won the 400 freestyle with the time of 3:44.48.

Later in the meet, Wenzlau, M. Friedman, P. Champion, and senior Katie Keopfgen blazed through the 200 meter freestyle relay with a time of 1:45.39.

The varsity boys had an outstanding meet, placing first in two of of three relays. They were victorious in the 200 meter medly and the 200 meter freestyle. They placed second and fourth in the 400-meter freestyle relay.

Paly’s outstanding swimmer, senior Lee Anderson, came out on top in the 50 meter freestyle and 100 meter freestyle. He was also part of Paly’s victory in the 200-meter freestyle relay along with senior team captain Kalani Leifer, freshman Peter Lo, and junior Jeremy Goldstein. They placed first with a time of 1:45.01. Anderson also swam freestyle in the 200 meter medly relay, along with sophomore Robbie Nakamura and juniors Jeremy Goldstein and Alec Goldfield, getting a time of 1:35.17. Monta Vista’s relay team came in more than two seconds after Paly.

Both teams showed strong potential in this meet. Paly’s success should continue due to their strong relay teams. Although Monta Vista trailed Paly in this meet, they have many strong competitors and should do well in the future.
Come see Paly at 3:15 p.m. this Wednesday at Paly in their meet against Saratoga.
