Vikings bruise Santa Clara Bruins

The Paly Varsity boys’ basketball team rolled its way to a 52-42 win over Santa Clara, Tuesday at Santa Clara High School. The Vikings came into the game with some momentum from their 52-33 win over Gunn on Friday.

The Vikings got their first points on the board when sophomore point guard Jeremy Lin hit a three pointer. The Bruins answered back with a quick drive to the hoop by senior shooting guard Will Ngo.

Sophomore power forward Cooper Miller missed two free throws but got his own rebound and made a no look pass to junior small forward Brian Baskauskas for two points. At the end of the first quarter the Vikings led, 14-1.

The second quarter began to look like a three-point shootout. The Bruins’ struck first with a long three pointer by Ngo. This was answered right away by a three-pointer from sophomore power forward Steven Brown.

Junior center Greg Walder made a big contribution to his team in the second quarter with two consecutive buckets and forcing a turnover. This led his team to a 27-26 lead going into half time.

The Vikings started off the second quarter by leaving the Bruins in the dust with 15 unanswered points. Senior center Oystein Aukland started the run with a powerful drive to the hoop. Lin got his share of the run with a three pointer after a Bruins turnover.

The Bruins’ Ngo ended this run with a long three pointer, but this was answered right back by the Viking’s Baskauskas who hit a three-pointer with 1 second remaining in the third quarter.

With a commanding lead of 48-30 the Vikings put this game on ice when Miller was fouled while shooting a 12-foot jumper. He made the shot and the free throw, successfully completing the three-point play. The Vikings went on to win 52-42

The Vikings hope to keep their momentum rolling into today’s rematch against Milpitas. After suffering a close loss to the Trojans on Jan 9. The Vikings hope to redeem themselves and with home court advantage, this is very possible.
