Paly stays undefeated in league

The Paly lady Viking water polo team defeated the Los Altos Eagles last Wednesday 7-2. This victory raises the Vikes’ record to 3-0 in league and dropping the Eagles to 0-3.

Paly out-played Los Altos, even while substituting many of the non-starters. The Vikes played a solid defensive game, forcing the Eagles to make numerous shot-clock violations, while goalies Erica Magill and Jillian Rubinstein made spectacular saves. Similar to the previous three Paly league games, Coach Steve Covec gave his bench valuable playing time.

Paly came out with an impressive first quarter, scoring four goals to Los Alto’s none. The game was scoreless for the first three minutes of play. Paly junior Remy Champion put in Paly’s first goal, putting the Vikes on top 1-0. Goals from Paly’s freshman Tanya Wilcox, and seniors Emmy Scandling and Christina Partridge followed in the first quarter.

Coming into the second quarter, the Eagles desperately needed a goal, but their hopes were postponed when they committed a 4-meter foul, giving the Vikes a free shot. Paly’s R. Champion nailed the free shot, making the score 5-0. Los Altos answered with a goal from senior Julia Lonhart, drilling the ball into the back of the net.

Third quarter action featured a couple of good saves by Palo Alto senior goalie Erica Magill, as well as Los Altos turnovers due to shot-clock violations. The Vikes added to their lead when senior Jennie Smith scored her first goal of the night. Los Altos returned shortly after with an impressive long-range goal by Teresa Field, who floated the ball over Magill’s outstretched arms, making the score 6-2.

The fourth quarter started off with an impressive Paly goal; immediately after the sprint, senior Emma Feeny attacked the goal, making a quick spin move, and dished the ball off to waiting junior Brittany Webster, who launched the ball into the net.

Covec comments on Paly’s paly, "The goalies are doing a good job blocking, and their passing is improving. Our offense missed many opportunities that we were should not be missing." He adds, "Some of the defense was nice to see. Nothing really good and nothing really bad happened in this game."

Paly’s next game is at 3:00pm on Oct. 22 against Cupertino at Lynbrook.
