Varsity boys water polo falls to Los Altos

In an effort to improve their league record, the Paly boys varsity water polo team put up a valiant fight against their toughest league competitor, the Los Altos Eagles. The boys lost their game 14: 5 after four quarters of hard play in their home pool last Wednesday October 15th.

The Vikings came out strong, with junior Seth Bowels dominating the sprint, but they could not hold out against the Eagles scoring offense and strong defense. Though the teams were tied 1: 1 for much of the first quarter, the gap widened as the game progressed.

"Lack of focus was what stopped us from staying with Los Altos," coach Jon Barnea said. "We had offensive opportunities but could not convert, then came down to the other end and gave up some pretty ugly goals."

Despite the loss, Paly made a number of improvements in this game. The boys were able to capitalize on four out of eight six on five opportunities and made strong developments in their offense by incorporating strategic drives.

"The guys did a good job of creating man up opportunities by being explosive drivers on the perimeter," Barnea said. "We have been talking a lot about being a better player without the ball so when you do get the ball you will have a better chance of doing something productive."

Paly’s strong swimming abilities and driving offensive plays gave the boys plenty of scoring opportunities, they had trouble putting shots away. Numerous shots were deflected, however some missed the goal all together, or rebounded off the cage.

The Vikings offensive capability was also hindered by several poor passes into set. Paly’s main hole set, sophomore Gregor Horstmeyer, was able to hold good position, but ultimately lost the ball due to passes that landed just outside his reach.

Though they did not take advantage of every goal opportunity, Paly was able to sport a well-balanced offense. Their five goals were spread among four key plays. Senior Lee Anderson led the Vikings with two goals, while Bowles, senior Wes Gage, and Horstmeyer followed with one goal apiece.

The loss was tough, but coach Barnea would like to see the boys learn from the game, and come out stronger against their next rival, Monta Vista.

"I expect the guys to come out and play hard. It will be the seniors last game at Paly so I would love nothing more than to have them leave on a good note," Barnea said. "It should be a great four quarters of polo."

The Vikings look forward to their final league game against Monta Vista at home this Wednesday, October 22.
