JV football dominates Monta Vista

The JV Viking’s performance this past Thursday can be summed up in two words, "total domination."

In their final non-league game of the season, the JV football team pounded Monta Vista, 43-0.

The Vikings were led by sophomore running back Roger Villanueva’s four touchdowns and 180 rushing yards.

The Vikings looked a bit soft on their first offensive drive of the game with two consecutive runs stuffed at the line of scrimmage by the Matadors’ defense. They turned to sophomore fullback Roger Prince on third down, who rushed for the first down. The Vikings capped off a 20-yard first down run by Prince, with a 40-yard reverse for the first score of the game.

On the ensuing drive the Vikings’ defensive pressure was led by sophomore defensive-end Tyler Peterson. The Vikings held the Matadors to fourth down and capped off their defensive stand when freshmen linebacker Kevin Dexter blocked the punt, which was recovered by Palo Alto.

The Vikings utilized their strong running game with a 13-yard pickup by Villanueva to the Matadors’ own 3-yard line. This short drive was finished off when Prince powered his way into the end zone to give the Vikings a two-touchdown lead.

After a fumble recovery and an incomplete drive the Vikings stopped the Matadors and regained possession with good field position. The Vikings turned to Villanueva once again, this time for a 34-yard run to the house.

The Vikings did well on offense but some players feel that they still have some work to do on defense, despite their shutout.

"We were productive on offense, but defense needs work, especially dropped interceptions," said Villanueva.

Head coach David Duran was pleased with the effort of his young offensive line.

"Overall, we did a good job in making big holes for our running backs," Duran said.

The Vikings are looking good despite the loss of one of their better players, Teddy Jones. Jones, who broke his arm in the Vikings’ win against Sequoia, will be out for the rest of the season.

If the Vikings continue to improve every week, they have a chance to be contenders in the tough De-Anza league.

"Our defense played very well," Duran said. "We were much more aggressive and much more physical this game."

The Viking’s first big test will come Thursday when they face Homestead at Paly in their first league game.
