Paly beats Gunn in league opener

The Paly Viking varsity lady water polo team defeated Gunn on Wednesday in its first league game with a score of 14-10.

Sophomore Phoebe Champion set the tone of the game by winning the sprint and setting up a scoring offense that dictated the game.

The Lady Vikes’ strong offense was led by Phoebe Champion and her sister, junior Remy Champion. They scored three goals and four goals, respectively. Senior Jennie Smith and junior Brittany Webster contributed two goals apiece.

Paly started off the game with strong offensive and defensive play though the first quarter. On the other hand, Gunn started off slowly, scoring only one goal to Paly’s six. Throughout the second quarter, Paly continued to attack. Junior Angelina Bena sealed the Vikes’ lead at half with a spectacular goal from mid-pool.

After the half, the Gunn team surprised the Vikings with organized and quick counter attacks. The Titans scored four goals to Paly’s two goals in the third quarter.

During the second half, Paly’s coach Steven Covec started some of the non-starters to give them valuable experience and more playing time. Covec says that this will help the team when starters get hurt and need strong subs to fill their place.

Gunn continued their comeback in the fourth quarter, but the Paly players had already secured their lead. Although Gunn fought and scored many goals in the second half, Paly won their first league game 14-10.

Covec comments, "We can’t just think about this game; we have to think about the future and next year. Everyone’s getting experience and that’s what matters."

Look forward to the Lady Vikes’ next matches starting this Friday, Oct. 3 in the McDonald tournament. The Vikes host their next league game at 3 p.m. Oct. 8 against Saratoga.
