The call that set off a lockdown at Palo Alto High School yesterday afternoon is a hoax, according to a statement released by the Palo Alto Police Department last night.

The press release revealed that the threat causing the lockdown was allegedly made from a lost or stolen phone, and that the caller has not yet been identified by the police.

According to the PAPD, the caller phoned 9-1-1 around 12:31 p.m. yesterday threatening to “shoot up” Paly. Officers searched a Paly student with the caller’s given name during the lockdown but found him uninvolved in the incident, the report states.

Detectives and officers are collaborating with Paly administration to identify the caller. Paly administrators released a statement through Schoology yesterday outlining resources for students, including the Wellness Center and Counseling and Support Services for Youth.

While the investigation continues, the PAPD encourages anyone with information about the incident to send in tips.

“We would like to emphasize that hoax threats such as this are not only criminal in nature, but they also create a great deal of stress and anxiety,” Palo Alto Police Department Captain Zach Perron stated.

The complete statement from the PAPD is included below.
