Palo Alto High School students will kick off Spirit Week with creative costumes and chants during “Theme Day” tomorrow.
On “Theme Day,” students wear costumes and clothing relating to their classes’ theme. The freshmen’s theme is “The Lorax,” the sophomores’ theme is “Lifeguards,” the juniors’ theme is “Ancient Egypt” and the seniors’ theme is “Out of this World.” Traditionally, seniors wear ’90s attire on Monday, despite their theme. Each theme also represents a class color: freshmen are orange, sophomores are red, juniors are yellow and seniors are green.
While each classes’ color remains the same each year, new themes are voted upon annually.
On Monday at lunch, students will participate in the year’s first spirit rally at the football field. Students from each grade also partake in three Minute to Win It games to earn points for their grade, according to junior Associated Student Body Spirit Commissioner Cezanne Lane.
In the first game “Shake It,” contestants will jump up and down for a minute with a pedometer strapped to their hip. At the end of one minute, the contestant with the highest number of steps wins the most points for his or her grade. Students participating in the second game, “Banana Bump,” must bump an orange past a finish line using a banana attached to their waist by a string.
The third and final game, “Balloon Popping Game,” was created this year, according to Lane.
“It’s very fun, exciting and innovative,” Lane said.
In the “Balloon Popping Game,” four students from each grade must pop twenty balloons that correspond to their color. The first grade to pop all of their balloons wins the most points.
According to Lane, the Minute to Win It games are often unpredictable.
“The Minute to Win It games aren’t weight based,” Lane said. “With Tug of War, it makes sense that the seniors win because they’re bigger, but with the Minute to Win It games it’s kind of by chance.”
In addition, the lunchtime rally will feature a Best Dressed contest and grades will receive points for their cheers.
