Even though student and parent access for Infinite Campus has been delayed, teachers and administrators have already begun using the program to take attendance and record grades. – Marc HavlikOnline parent and student access to grades and schedules will be made available by the end of this month at the latest, according to assistant principal Kim Diorio.

The Palo Alto Unified School District will meet with all high schools and secondary schools tomorrow to discuss when and how to make Infinite Campus available to students and parents, according to Diorio.

While teachers have already begun to use Infinite Campus for viewing class lists, accessing grade books and taking attendance, student and parent access has been delayed because the district wants to make sure that there are no mistakes in setting up the system, according to Ann Dunkin, the district’s head of Information Technology.

“We want to make sure all students and parents are linked carefully before we open the portals,” said Dunkin. “We want to be very careful.”

According to Dunkin, Infinite Campus is a computer database that has replaced the School Administration Student Information system. SASI, which allowed administrators access to attendance, schedules, transcripts and disciplinary records, has been discontinued, requiring the district to find a different computer database.

Infinite Campus will provide student and parent access to features from both InClass and SASI. With Infinite Campus, teachers, students and parents will have access to a calender, schedules, transcripts and attendance records. Teachers can also choose to announce due dates and missing assignments using this program. Infinite Campus provides a graduation progress planner; however, this feature may or may not be ready by this year, according to Diane Lund, project manager of Infinite Campus.

Infinite Campus will also enable easy access to a student’s health and immunization records for their parents’ benefit, according to Dunkin.

Previously, SASI could only be accessed by administration on campus, but Infinite Campus will give parents and students their own accounts, so records can be viewed anywhere.

“Infinite Campus is really convenient because it doesn’t need a client, doesn’t need to be installed, and works on iPads, iPhones and almost all smart phones,” Lund said.

Infinite Campus accounts are not limited to one per household. Parents will be able to easily view student records with their own usernames, according to Lund.

Attendance errors should diminish with Infinite Campus, as students and teachers will be able to see their attendance record online, according to Career Adviser Christina Owens, who assists in the attendance office.

The switch to Infinite Campus has been a generally positive experience for teachers, including math teacher Judy Choy.

“It wasn’t a difficult switch for me because I have my own website, but for other people, it might be a longer process,” Choy said. “But compared to InClass, this is nicer and more user-friendly.”
