Paly’s perennial intergrade ladies only football championship, known to many as Powderpuff Football, came to a close on Thursday with a 3-2 victory for the seniors over the juniors.
Paly’s sport with perhaps the highest viewers to days played ratio was well attended despite (or perhaps because of) the risk of streakers and Wednesday’s rain.
This capped off a successful tournament that saw the grades end up in their seeded order with the freshmen coming in last followed by the sophomores and then the juniors and the victors, the Seniors.
All of the teams surprised the packed quad with their level of play.
“Freshman cannon Julia Saul was a big sensation,” said Paly Viking tight-end Kevin Kannappan. “Both her throws to Hannah Bundy and Andrea Clerici-Hermandinger were cool.”
Unfortunately for the freshmen, however, Saul wasn’t enough to take the sophomore’s in Wednesday’s rainy consolation game as the game ended with a 2-1 victory for the class of 2013.
“We had a great game and I think we’ll come back even stronger next year,” sophomore Powderpuffer Tia Rabinovitz said. “We’re all growing mentally and physically, as well as becoming closer as a team. Classes of 2012, 2014 and 2015 better watch out.”
After making it to the finals game by one point the juniors battled the seniors in a tough game. But the junior mettle was not enough to overcome senior experience.
“We won because we played tough, our plays were smart, our coaches were organized, and we have a ton of top-class athletes,” senior Katie Maser said. “All of those combined earned us the victory.”
“The girls all played well and competitively,” referee John Brunette said.
