The Palo Alto High School girls’ basketball team (11-3, 5-0) scored its first victory over crosstown rival Gunn High School in three years, 47-39, on Paly’s first quad night of the season.
It was a big night for the Vikings. The win broke Gunn’s three year dominance of the rivalry and also moved Paly into first place of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League with around a month left in the regular season. The two teams came in tied for the league lead. The offense was led by juniors Lindsay Black and Emilee Osagiede as well as senior Sidney Davis with 14, 13, and 12 points respectively. Black scored 12 of her points from beyond the arc. Davis and Osagiede had nine rebounds each.
The game was a low scoring affair that went back and forth between the two teams. The Vikings took the lead in the first quarter, 11-8, but the Titans pulled ahead in the second quarter, 15-23.
Paly gained momentum in the third quarter thanks to a string of consecutive baskets and held a 38-29 lead heading into the final quarter.
Although the Titans staged a late rally, Paly was able to end the night with its fifth consecutive SCVAL win.
The Vikings will face off against Los Gatos at Los Gatos High School on Wednesday, January 26, at 7:00 p.m.
