The crowded bike rack situation at Palo Alto High School remains a work in progress.
Although some bike racks have been recently added to either end of the racks in front of the science building, crowding is still a problem, according to Assistant Principal Jerry Berkson. He said that more bike racks should arrive in two or three weeks.
The new bike racks will most likely be installed near the custodian office and auto shop, although Berkson said the dirt strip between the math building and auto shop is still a possibility. The only problem with the former is that it requires putting asphalt in, which may not be worth it.
“We are still considering the dirt strip, and are getting bids to put asphalt there,” Berkson said. “It may be too expensive to do it, as that area will be demolished at some point.”
According to a school announcement earlier this week, students are no longer allowed to lock bikes to the fence of the glassblowing area, and any bike locked there will have its lock cut and be taken to the office.
“The fire marshall came by and said it was a fire hazard,” Berkson said. “If there was an emergency, people couldn’t exit.”
According to Berkson, he has been supervising the fence in the morning to make sure students don’t lock bikes there, but the administration has not started cutting locks yet. They will start cutting locks as soon as the signs telling students not to park bikes along the fence go up, Berkson said.
