The Palo Alto High School girls’ tennis team (1-0-3) lost to Saratoga High School, 1-6, on Tuesday at Paly.
Despite the defeat, head coach Andy Harader was satisfied with the team’s performance.
“They were in there competing,” Harader said. “Saratoga is the best team in Northern California, maybe even in all of California. I think our team played pretty well for what we are built [for].”
Number three doubles pair, seniors Jacqueline Friduss and Margo Gerould, scored the only victory against Saratoga. After winning the first set 6-2 and losing the second 4-6, the duo won the 10-point tiebreaker, 15-13.
“I think we performed well,” Friduss said. “I’m usually really bad with tiebreakers, so that win really made me happy.”
Despite her individual success against Saratoga, Friduss noted that the doubles lineup still has plenty to improve on.
“We need to work on being together as a team,” Friduss said. “Always staying in it, even when the other person makes a mistake. Just focusing on staying together as a team, not focusing on the other team that we’re playing.”
Number one doubles pair, senior Sabrina Yeung and junior Amy Ke, managed to get a few plays in, but lost both sets, 0-6 and 2-6, respectively.
“[Yeung and Ke] faced a very strong team,” Harader said. “Anywhere we get a play in, I’m happy.”
However, Harader acknowledged that the team has some work to do moving forward.
“In singles, we really need to work on approach shots and working the point,” Harader said. “Sometimes we’re impatient. We need to be more patient, wait until we get the opening, and hammer the point home. We’ll start working on that next week.”
