The Palo Alto High School’s varsity football team (2-0-0) remains undefeated after beating the Archbishop Mitty Monarchs (1-1-1), 20-7, in the Viking’s first home game.
Paly junior fullback Dre Hill scored all three touchdowns for the Vikings in the first half of the game.
“What a come-out day for him [Hill],” head Coach Earl Hansen said. “We need that. That was very good of him, and the team by all means.”
The Vikings got on the board quickly when Hill rushed for a 34-yard touchdown just five minutes into the game. With less than three minutes of the first quarter remaining, Hill rushed for 57-yards to score his second touchdown of the night. At the end of the first quarter, the Vikings led 13-0.
“We played well this week, we definitely made a big improvement from last week and we stuck to our game plan,” Paly senior quarterback Christoph Bono said. “We wanted to come out and hit them early to set the tone.”
In the second quarter, fullback Hill scored the Viking’s last touchdown of the game. Hill rushed for nearly 100 yards at the end of the half.
“We definitely played well in the first half,” Bono said. “The second half we let down a little bit, but I was overally pretty impressed on how we played.”
The Viking’s defense also played a huge role by only allowing the Monarchs to score a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Paly sacked Mitty’s senior quarterback Kyle Boehm four times on the night.
Although the Vikings did not score any points in the third and fourth quarter, Hansen was proud of his team’s performance.
“I think we played about three times, several hundred times better than we did last week,” Hansen said. “They’re a good football team, they are well-coached. Our kids outplayed them–out-toughed them and outplayed them.”
According to Hansen, the team’s success was due to its ability to keep possession of the ball.
“We didn’t have that many turnovers, we had only one turnover, if I remember correctly.”
Paly’s senior tight end Michael Cullen felt that the team delivered well.
“We just needed to execute and not make mistakes, and we did that today,” Cullen said.
The Vikings expect to improve on their play for the next upcoming games.
“We just have to keep getting better because we don’t have any soft opponents,” Hansen said.
The Vikings will face the San Benito Haybalers at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 24 at San Benito High School.
