Key Club contestants representing local schools will compete at the sixth annual Mr. Key Club Pageant at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 30.
The event will be in Paly’s Haymarket Theater. Admission to the pageant is $3. All proceeds will be donated to the Red Cross relief effort in Haiti, according to Paly Key Club President Erika Ji.
“We have 10 contestants in the pageant, one from every school in our Key Club division, Division 34 South,” Ji said.
A former Paly Key Club member, Charlene Wang, began this relatively new tradition just a few years ago in 2005, according to Ji.
While each school in Division 34 South gets to nominate a contestant, the process of choosing that person varies among the schools.
“Each school has its own method of choosing its contestant,” Ji said. “Sometimes the club votes on nominees; other times club officers decide.”
Paly’s contestant, determined by a club election, is senior Yusei Tajima.
During the pageant, the contestants will model swimwear, formal wear, and Key Club spirit wear, perform a talent, answer Key Club trivia and personal questions and more, according to Ji.
Though the event is sponsored by Key Club, it is open to everyone.
“Although it’s geared toward an audience that knows about Key Club and includes Key Club trivia, everyone is welcome to come watch,” Ji said.
Many students that go to the pageant leave with fond memories.
“My favorite part [of the pageant] is definitely the talent competition because it’s interesting to see what all the contestants pick,” Key Club Vice President Libby Li said. “One time we had some guy do the Single Ladies dance.”
