Students look forward to the second round of auditions for Paly’s spring play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, today after school in the Haymarket Theater.
Although theater teacher and Director Kathleen Woods plans on sticking to the traditional Shakespearean version of the play, several modern twists may be incorporated into it.
“My concept of the show, the physical concept and the time concept, is Victorian Valentine,” Woods said. “There will probably be some contemporary parts to it. Victorian Valentine is the basis of it. And it will be the overriding part of the show.”
Interested students had two weeks in advance to prepare for the memorized portion of the audition. Woods provided some sides, or pieces of script such as monologues and parts of scenes, for potential cast members who do not have a pre-memorized piece used previously for a different audition.
“Shakespeare is all about the language,” Woods said. “You have to have strength in vocal delivery and we need people [students] with strength as performers. People are required to memorize a short piece and they have to bring in a movement piece.”
Auditions continue today after school in the theater, and callbacks will be on Thursday.
“[My goal is to] weave some different types of music and dance into the performance,” Woods said.
