The following is a complete transcription of the above podcast.
Lee: Hi, I’m Shannon Lee.
Hine: And I’m Meg Hine.
Lee: You’re listening to another episode of VoiceWaves.
Hine: The Associated Student Body hosted Paly’s annual Club Day event at lunch on Friday, Sept. 18 in the quad. Students had the opportunity to learn about all the clubs at Paly and sign up for clubs that they were interested in.
Lee: Although Club Day has become a tradition at Paly, this year saw a couple of innovations, including an information table and a directory. Students and club leaders could refer to the directory to locate a specific club table. Kindel Launer, the student activities director, came up with this idea.
Launer: There were three really big 3 x 5 maps plus there were 8.5 x 11 maps that went to all the club presidents with the assignment of their club and the associated table.
Lee: Launer also wanted to give more independence to the students.
Launer: I believe in organization and helping kids be independent. So things are fair, they go alphabetically, you know where you are, you figure out where the table is, and then I think when students feel like they know what is going to happen, their stress levels go down. And thats a big part of my teaching, a big part of my philosophy.
Hine: Many clubs, such as the Red Cross club, used various tactics to attract and inform potential club members.
Eden Tseng: Oreos, pencils, free stuff, a very official looking poster, being very nice to them, saying hi to them.
Lee: Overall, club leaders were satisfied with the number of sign ups this year.
Grant Sauer: I think it was a fair amount of members. It was larger than last year which is progress.
Hine: Launer was pleased with the outcome of club day. However, she sees several opportunities for improvement.
Launer: Kids were really independent and clubs showed up, they were organized, I was impressed. First of all, we need more recycling, and more trash. We’re getting a new microphone for the sound system because I want to be able to, when its time to shut it down, make an announcement, remind kids to look around. If you see anything laying around, pick it up and throw it away because the custodians are out here picking up after students. Then I would make it clearer that you can grab a water and grab condiments. We had people stationed telling students that, but again, a simple sign. I need to hear back from teachers, how many kids asked to be released early from fourth period. And then I need to hear from teachers how many kids were tardy because it was club day. There’s a timing piece we can work on so that we honor teachers needs to run their lessons and we honor student needs to participate and celebrate club day
Lee: As in other years, lunch was 35 minutes longer than usual, and students were served free lunches, courtesy of the PTSA. Students could choose between hamburgers, veggie burgers, hot dogs and Caesar salad.
Hine: Thank you for listening. I’m Meg Hine.
Lee: And I’m Shannon Lee. Tune in next time for another episode of VoiceWaves.
