The Lady Vikes’ “rivalry” against the Lady Titans from Gunn proved to be rather one-sided on Friday night. The Titans jumped out to an astounding 28-0 lead and never looked back, cruising to a 55-21 victory.
The Titans’ starting five were a good deal taller than the Vikings’ and crashed the boards with authority. They rarely let Paly get into the paint, where they later found themselves most effective.
Victoria Shih put the Lady Vikes on the board with one minute left in the first half, and then a quick steal led to a lay-up by senior Madison Hoffacker, making it 28-4 going into the half. Seniors Olivia Garcia and Allie Coleman set the tone for a better second half of the game with early momentum-swinging lay-ups. The Titans (16-0, 5-0) outscored the Lady Vikes by 24 in the first half, but only by 10 in the second.
Harvard-bound Gunn senior Jasmine Evans led the Titans with 18 points, most of which were scored in the paint. She was nicely complemented by her fellow senior teammate, Tamar Cartun, who sunk four three-pointers for a total of 12 points.
The Vikings (3-8, 1-3) currently stand in last place in league. They certainly have some work to do if they hope to make the playoffs. Their next game is at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at home against Wilcox High School (10-6, 4-1). Wilcox’s only league loss this season came in a nail-bitter to Gunn.
