Students from all classes at Palo Alto High School are working diligently on building floats that will be presented today, the end of Spirit Week.
Students kicked off the process of float building last Friday, after school. The work is expected to continue throughout this week after school.
Focusing on this year’s themes: “Jurassic Park” for seniors, “Teen Beach” for juniors, “Lightning McQueen” for sophomores, and “Scooby Doo” for freshmen.
According to sophomore class president Helen Li, the best part about float building is being a part of the process and seeing its progress from the beginning all the way until completion.
“The best part is seeing it come together, because we’ve been planning this for a really long time in class council, and I’m just really glad that we pulled it off,” Li said.
According to Li, the most challenging part of the float building process is the planning and execution of the design process.
“The hardest part is the blueprints, because we had to scale everything down or up based on reference pictures, and it was a lot of math,” Li said.
According to class senator Keerthi Raj, the best part of float building is seeing the development of the floats and all the teamwork that is needed.
“We went through so many float designs, placing all the orders and I’ve loved seeing it all being put together and seeing everyone together building this amazing float,” said Raj.
According to Raj, the hardest part of the float building process was deciding on a specific design and coming to a solution.
“One of the hardest processes we (Associated Student Body) had when we were planning was that we couldn’t really decide on a float design, which caused a lot of chaos,” Raj said. “But we all made compromises, and we all worked together really well.”
According to Raj, float building is a great experience for anyone, especially for freshman.
“It’s a great way to not only bond with your class, but also it’s so cool because you actually get to see something that you built single handedly,” Raj said. “Being a freshman in new school can be so intimidating, so meeting new people and getting yourself out there, and getting yourself involved is a great way to start your high school career.”
