As one of only two freshmen running on the varsity level for the boys’ track and field team this year, sprinter Daniel Jones’ years of experience with the sport have surely been worthwhile.
“I’ve always been running and sprinting for fun with my dad since I was three,” said Jones, who has earned the position of first leg on the varsity 4×100 relay team along with sophomore Bobby Holman and seniors Will Frazier and Trent Hart.
Jones shows great athleticism for such a young competitor by also competing on the varsity level for both the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Jones finished fourth place in the varsity 100-meter race during Paly’s first league meet against Lynbrook on March 8.
During the K-Bell Invite at Los Gatos High School on March 10, Jones placed 26 out of 54 in the varsity quarter-lap dash, clocking in with a time of 11.74 seconds, according to track and field head coach Jason Fung. If Jones had competed at the frosh/soph level at K-Bell, he would have placed third overall in that group, Fung said.
While displaying outstanding efforts and performances at his meets, Jones claims this athletic talent has come to him easily.
“I’ve always been naturally gifted in running,” Jones said. “I’ve just naturally gravitated to it.”
Teammate and senior Trent Hart wholeheartedly recognizes Jones’ gift as well
“As a freshman, Daniel has potential to be a great track athlete at Palo Alto High School,” Hart said. “I commend his efforts for stepping his game up and participating at the varsity class.”
Jones’ athleticism extends far beyond the rubber track. He played the position of forward on Paly’s frosh/soph soccer team this past winter and also enjoys recreational baseball and basketball.
Nevertheless, Jones seems to shine most on the track on account of his speed, agility, and determination to improve.
“He’s a great kid to work with,” Fung said. “He does what he’s told with no complaints, and always wants to get better. He’s the ideal kid to train with.”
Senior Will Frazier, Jones’ track and field teammate, also sees Jones’ remarkable ability and endless potential.
“He’s one of the best freshmen around,” Frazier said. “He’s faster than a lot of kids. He’s really talented, and will be really good as a senior. I know that for sure.”
With the track and field season well underway, Jones holds high hopes for his personal performance this year, yet is unsure of his chances of achieving that goal as of now.
“I want to go to states,” Jones said. “I don’t think it’s realistic though.”
Already planning ahead for the future, Jones optimistically added, “Hopefully next year, I’ll make it the state meet.”
No matter if he makes it to competition at the state level or not, Jones has already established a stellar reputation for himself as a track and field star.
“Because I took him under my wing,” Hart noted, “Daniel is soon going to be the next big thing at Palo Alto High School.”
