An overcast sky hung heavily over the bustling scene on Club Day. Students gathered in the quad today to pick up free lunch, to sign up for clubs, and to watch Paly’s hip-hop club "Hipnotik" perform on stage.
"There are a lot more people involved in advertising their clubs [this year]," senior Christine Young said. "Everyone is having a good time."
Clubs sprawled across the quad with posters, sign-up lists and treats to tempt potential members.
"We’re getting a lot of genuine sign-ups," co-president of the Creative Writing Club, senior Camden Kimura said.
Bright balloons pierced the foggy sky while students tested rowing machines for the Crew Club. The Robotics team paraded their robots by driving them around school, dodging in and out of students’ ways. The Action in Africa club created a special booth complete with a canopy and African music in the background.
"It’s really busy and there’s a lot of variety of clubs," freshman Rebecca DeHovitz said. "There’s something for everyone."
The clubs were set up in a slightly more accessible fashion than last year.
"It’s a lot more organized," junior Darren Reis said. "I like that."
During the lunch period, parent volunteers handed out extra bags of chips and cookies to students milling about on the quad.
"We over-ordered food, so we’re trying to sell it to the sports boosters [for the concession stand at football games]," Student Activities Director Allison Davies said. "We spent $4,000 less than last year even though we over-ordered."
With few setbacks and better organization this year, Club Day was certainly a success in the eyes of the organizers.
"I think everything went really well." Davies said.
