The Pops Concert and Swing Dance will take place tonight at 7 p.m tonight in the Big Gym, the final dance to be held in the historic venue. The event will feature songs performed by the concert band, the symphonic band and the jazz band, who which will perform swing songs and give students a chance to learn to swing dance.
“The symphonic band is playing a complication of Benny Goodman’s best songs and a french song called L’Arlessiene,” symphonic band percussionist Fabo Garduño said. “The concert band is playing a really cool piece called ‘A symphony of sitcoms,’ which is a recollection of theme songs from sitcoms.”
Unlike other band concerts throughout the year, the Pops Concert features food, dancing and swing music.
“It’s probably my favorite concert of the year,” Garduño said. “It’s a great way to support the Paly community and arts department and it’s an opportunity to eat pizza and dance to music with your friends.”
Senior Riley Burt, who plays the saxophone in the symphonic band, also encourages students to attend.
“It’s a good place to take a date,” Burt said. “You can also learn to swing dance which is really fun.”
It will also be the last time that the bands perform in the Big Gym.
“It’s pretty disheartening for me,” Burt said. “It was going to be the last time for me anyway but I’ll miss the gym as I know many others will.”
The concert will start at 7 p.m. and will end at around 10:30 p.m. Tickets can be bought at the door and are also being sold by Paly band students.
