After tying Santa Clara High School 0-0 Friday, the Palo Alto High School boys’ soccer team (1-0-1) will face the Saratoga Falcons team (0-1-1) in their third league game tomorrow at Saratoga High School.

The Vikings will play tomorrow without their captain, junior midfielder Wesley Woo, after he received a red card during the final minutes of the Vikings’ game against Santa Clara Friday.

“There were two soft fouls that the ref was a bit harsh on,” Woo said. “That resulted in a red card, which means I’ll be out for the next game [against Saratoga].”

Junior defender Jack Brook says the team will work around the loss of Woo.

“Missing Wesley will definitely be bad since he’s one of our core players,” Brook said.”But I’m sure guys will step up.”

Despite his absence, Woo is confident that the team will play well at tomorrow’s game.

“I think there are definitely players that will step up and fill the role that I left,” Woo said.”It’s also helpful that I’ve heard that Saratoga isn’t at their best this year, so we aren’t exactly playing the best team in the league.”

Brook says he believes Palo Alto is up to the challenge of facing Saratoga, especially given that they haven’t faced them since their infamous losing season.

“The last time we played them, two years ago, when I wasn’t on the team, we lost,” Brook said. “But I think we can definitely take them this year.“

Both Woo and Brook’s statements are reflected by Saratoga’s winless first two games this season. The falcons lost to Los Gatos High School, who placed second in the league last year, by a score of 3-0, and tied Fremont High School 0-0. Fremont was only just promoted from the El Camino League, in a situation similar to Paly’s.

No matter what the outcome of the Saratoga game will be, Woo said that he sees the game as an opportunity for the team to grow and improve.

“I feel that we’ve put in some good performances, but we can and will still improve as we play more games together,” Woo said.
